Overview
At the end of their 2023 fiscal years, U.S.governments, including state, municipal and county governments, and school districts, carried $6.1 trillion in total liabilities. These liabilities included $1.5 trillion in public pension obligations and $958 billion for retiree health care obligations, referred to as other post-employment benefits.
